Welcome to The Danish Canadian National Museum & Gardens

Enhancing the understanding of the Danish Canadian heritage

Volunteering

We wish to thank all of the volunteers who have helped out over the years in many ways.  Without their generous support, the Museum & Gardens would not be what it is today.

The Museum & Gardens facilities, programs and services require the input of human energy as well as financial resources.  There is a dedicated group of volunteers that lend a hand to enhance the Museum & Gardens experience for our visitors.  As members and friends of the Museum & Gardens, volunteering may also enrich us. Volunteering allows the opportunity to interact with others, belong to an established community as well as support the Museum & Gardens in the following areas:

Communications:  Volunteers help with the copying, assembling and mailing of the DCNMS Newsletter.

Fund Raising Activities:  Volunteers help with the operation of bingos, casinos and auctions.  Bingos are held one to two times per month at Cannery Row Bingo Hall in Red Deer, Alberta and most are in the daytime during the week with a commitment of about 5 hours per week. Casinos occur once every 2 to 2.5 years.  Auctions are organized as part of the AGM/Danish Federation Conference and as special events.

Maintenance and Development:  Volunteers also work both inside the Museum and outside on the grounds on projects including garden care, restoration and renovation, as well as new construction and development.  Volunteers with special skills such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and welding along with supplying and working with equipment and/or machinery are always in demand.

Special Events:  Volunteers assist with decorating, hosting, food preparation, serving and cleanup at DCNMS special events including:  Fastelavn, Yard Sale, Æbleskiver 'N Jam Day, Viking Day, and Julestue.

Daily Operations:  Volunteers help in the Dormitory Coffee House with welcoming guests, hosting visitors through to cleanup.

Governance and Planning:  Volunteers also serve on the Board of Directors as well as participate in the working Committees.
